A Brief History of Barnby Dun Cricket Club
Barnby Dun Cricket Club was formed in 1870 and has been a founder member of a number of local leagues. The club eventually established itself at Parkhill in Barnby Dun where it played for over fifty years until 2002, when the ground was bought by a local developer for use as a golf driving range. We have now moved to Doncaster Road, Kirk Sandall onto the site of the former Pilkington's Recreation Cricket Club, a well known local club. We have now secured a new pavilion which will support our aim of providing top quality playing facilities for all our young (and not so young!) players.
We run two senior teams, the 1st XI in division 4 and the 2nd XI now, in division 9 for 2023 of the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League. We also have a mid-week team in the Doncaster Evening League and a Sunday team in the Barnsley League.
Junior cricket is thriving in our club thanks to the enthusiastic support of our parents and team managers. We have teams at U9, U11 & U13, U15 & U17 age group levels with some very talented young cricketers in them! These teams provide a steady supply of youngsters to local representative sides, including some at Yorkshire Schools level, and make us very optimistic about the future of our club.
Famous former players include Johnny Wardle, the ex-England spin bowler, and the club has consistently produced a steady supply of young cricketers to the Yorkshire schoolboy and representative teams in recent years. The wicket and outfield have been much improved over the last few years, thanks to the excellent work by our groundsman Peter Fell, comparing favourably with any in the area, and the ground has tremendous potential for future development. We now have a new changing facility with two fully equipped changing rooms with hot showers and toilets, a large social area, officials' changing rooms, scorers' box and public toilet facilities. This is great news.
In 1970, the club celebrated 100 years since its formation in 1870 and held a festival summer of events producing a 'Centenary Brochure'. A copy of this has been retrieved from the club archives and is now available to view online giving a fascinating insight into the club's history and heritage.
Barnby Dun Cricket Club celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2020 with a number of special events to mark the occasion.
