Welcome to Barnby Dun Cricket Club
Barnby Dun 1st XI 2009
Barnby Dun Cricket Club was formed in 1870 and has been a founder member of local cricket leagues over a number of years. Famous former players include Johnny Wardle, the ex-England spin bowler, and the club has consistently produced a steady supply of young cricketers to the Yorkshire schoolboy and representative teams in recent years. Junior cricket is thriving in the club with teams at U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17 levels providing opportunities for over 70 youngsters. The club also runs 2 senior teams in the Pontefract League and a Sunday league team at the weekend. The wicket and outfield have been much improved over the last few years, thanks to the excellent work by our award winning groundsman Bill Barnes, comparing favourably with any in the area, and the ground has tremendous potential for future development. We are currently working with the Parish Council to develop a much needed new changing facility on the ground which will provide up to date changing rooms with hot showers and a comfortable and clean social room for the traditional teas. The fixtures for the forthcoming 2010 season have just been published by the Pontefract and District league. The season kicks off on Saturday 24th April with the 1st XI away to old rivals Monk Bretton in division 2, and the newly pro-moted 2nd XI at home to Pledwick in division 5. The 1st XI fixture list contains some interesting games such as the local derby against Hatfield Town on 1st May and the one against keen local rivals Askern. The 2nd XI also have some local games against Bentley Colliery and Sprotbrough, for example, as well as playing against newer teams to the league such as Garforth whose ground is on the outskirts of Leeds. Bring it on! Fixtures...
Our groundsman Bill Barnes has been recognised in the 2008 Groundsman of the Year awards, sponsored by cricketworld.com by receiving a commended certificate for groundsmen across the UK. This award recognises the tremendous effort, hard work and high standards achieved in the recreational game throughout the year. Here, local MP Rosie Winterton presents Bill with his award at the cricket ground supported by junior players in the club from nearby Hungerhill School. Well done, Bill, for doing such a great job with the ground! -view slideshow...
The Sports Association has been working very hard over the winter with the Parish Council to secure the development of a new pavilion at the Glass Park ground. Plans are now at an advanced stage with an identified design and tender from Foreman's buildings accepted, and planning permission for the new building being applied for. Involving, as it does, a significant amount of public funding, this has been no straight forward task but the project is very near to getting the final go ahead. The preferred design layout can be viewed via the link above and very fine it should look too. Both the cricket and football sections look forward with great anticipation to being able to use the new facilities this summer.
